Why people reach for Dexpan

We reach for Dexpan when a heavy breaker or blasting isn't a good fit, usually when the work is close to a building, inside a basement or another enclosed space, or anywhere the noise, vibration, or flying debris would be a problem. Because it works quietly with no vibration, it won't shake a foundation, crack a neighboring wall, or fill a room with racket, and it keeps the dust and mess down compared to jackhammering. Drill the holes

You drill a line of holes in a pattern across the concrete or rock. We'll help you plan the spacing so the break goes where you want it.

Mix and pour

Mix the Dexpan powder with water into a pourable slurry and fill the holes. That's the whole application, no special training and no blasting permit. Follow the manufacturer's directions when you mix it, and wear eye protection.

It cracks on its own

Over the next several hours the grout expands and cracks the material along your holes. Warm weather often cracks it overnight, cold weather takes longer.

What exactly is Dexpan?

It's a non explosive demolition grout, also called an expansive cracking agent. You mix the powder with water, pour it into drilled holes, and it expands and cracks the concrete or rock apart. No blasting, no explosives, and no blasting permit.

How long does it take to crack the concrete?

Usually overnight in warm weather. You'll often see the first cracks within several hours, and they keep opening up over the next day or two. In cold weather it works slower, which is why using the right type for the temperature matters.

Is it really quiet enough to use indoors or next to a house?

Yes, and that's the whole reason to use it. There's no explosion, no pounding, and no vibration, so it won't shake a foundation or a neighboring wall, and it won't fill a basement with noise. It's about as quiet as demolition gets.

Will Dexpan break concrete that has rebar in it?

Yes, it cracks reinforced concrete just fine. Keep in mind the grout breaks the concrete, not the steel, so once it's cracked you may still need to cut the exposed rebar to get the pieces apart. We can handle that part with our saws if you'd like.

Which type do I need, and how much?
